Yom Shoah

On Yom Shoah, Yom Shoah,
God shut his eyes
A curtain was drawn in the night
The sins of the soul
The heart was withdrawn from the light

God full of Mercy
God full of Mercy
The anguished cry never departs
The body may suffer in Shoah and die
Worse still lies the death of the heart

When Abraham looked to the
 sea of the night
Did the sparkling stars
 tenderly shine?
Did the sands of the
seashore cry, 'Love us!
Your mercy, your mercy,
your mercy is mine."
Could Abraham look past
 the centuries of time
To see promised land or seed filled
Did you think, Lord, to tell him
of Yom Ha Shoah
Affliction, not your tender will

Chorus

It took just four years
to change morning to midnight
The Gales that blew every shore
And you, God of Mercy,
could have held back the winds
In silence, who could
know your will
If the Lord's heart were known,
would we hear the crying
Ha Shoah, Lord
You could have stilled
But your hands were taken
in covering your eyes
Your ears stopped the
sound of the chill

Chorus

Almost Passover

It's almost Passover
My father came into the door
He brought a new lamb,
We all knew what the Lamb was for
He gently set the lamb
Upon the floor, it could run free
We watched to see
If it had one impurity....

And when we saw that the lamb was free...
Father sacrificed the Lamb
He sacrifced the Lamb
I saw the blood upon our hands
Blood that saved from Pharaoh's land
Sacrified the Lamb
Sacrifed the Lam
And though not many understand
It marks the door

Its almost passover
Jerusalem's gates an open shore
There came a new Lamb
We knew not what the Lamb was for
We watched the Lamb
To see just one impurity
We could not find one
Pilate said, "The Lamb is free"
Outside the gates there was a tree...

And Father sacrificed the Lamb
He sacrified the Lamb
....
I will remember
As Pesach still comes through the door
In all of Zion
No Lamb is killed here anymore
The price was infinite
A final sacrifice was made
In Calvary's shadow
My debts were fully paid
He is risen from a grave

Because He sacrified the Lamb
My Father sacrified the Lamb
I claim the blood upon my hand
Saved from satan's hand
Because....Lamb 2x
His blood, God's answer to the ram
He is the door

Shemor Sherit Y'israel

Shomer Sharay Yisrael

Shemor Sherit Y'israel
Baruch Ata Adonai Ha Shem
Shemor Sherit Yisrael

Guardian of the Gates of Israel
Guard what remains of Israel
For there may come a time when I cannot stand
For the Land I Love

Guardian of the Gates of Israel
Protect what remains of Israel
The Kings of the Earth they never see
A nation God called Glory

Far beyond Eden
Life became hard
I dream of the Gates of Israel
A Golden Rose, Jerusalem
Dream of the Gates of Israel

And if some day I sleep on and on
And all but my love for Zion is gone
May all of Jerusalem, Jeshurun run
To the Gate
The Eastern Gate
And watch for Messiah from on High
Promised he'd return
Guardian of the Gates of Israel
Guard what remains of Israel
Protect what remains of Israel
Save what remains of Israel

Torah Scroll 7303a

The Rabbi took the Torah
 from the Aron Ha Kodesh
With care the sheepskin scrolls
 were rolled aside
This scroll not like the others had
 a number on the wood
The Story of the scroll from Prague
 did hide

What do those hand-paint numbers mean?
 What story do they tell?
The Rabbi's face grew solemn
and tears began to swell
And he told of one dark moment
 back in 1939
When a synagogue was razed by
Satan's pride

The Nazis numbered every scroll
left in the ash and dust
The hands that held the torah scroll
were taken in arrest
And the voices and the tears that
held the Torah that last day
Were numbered and no longer passed
 that way

Torahs strewn on floor of ash
the soldiers took away
They gave the scroll anumber: 7303a
Placed in Prague for a museum as
a replica of wrong
But instead the living Torah lasted
far beyond Death's song

And where did every song that sang
go past that fateful day?
Their song was burned as ashes to
the wind
The everlasting wind blew round the
world and wandered through
The soul of every heart that
 somehow lived

Well the distant deaths still cry
from the ashes and the smoke
The last Kaddish still ringing
in death's sway
And I wonder what became of the hands
that last did hold
The Torah 7303a

Yesterday the Rabbi went
to the Aron Ha Kodesh
With love and care the
Torah scroll is brung
A day for a Bat Mitzvah,
just fifty years have passed
He hands the scroll from
Prague to one so young

The young one's name is Rachel,
the Torah scroll she holds
Each step around the temple
whispers steps of long ago
The music of the footsteps
of that eternal song
Sings loudly as the Word
sings along.

Baruch ata Adonai Elohim
eloheynu, elohe Yisrael
Oseh Nifla'ot L'vado

Life rises frrom the ashes
what death cannot contain
A covenant once born can never die
From Rachel unt Rachel the
hope is ever new
In Torah scroll and child
God's voice will cry

And rise now from the ashes,
the Torah and the chil
From Europe to a land born
 free and strong
And listen to the voices of
that timeless synagogue
Lasting, everlasting is the song.

Daniel's Song

>07/29/98 1:55 PM
It was a toy train and it ran
In circles round and round
The train and back again
Circling trees and houses
Under Daniel's watchful eye
Round and round
To click and clatter
Fencing in the tiny lie
One day I will ride a real train
Off to lands of only dreams
One day I will journey farther
Out beyond the mountain green

Round and round to click and clatter
Round and round on tracks of steel
Trains go where they're bound to travel
Never free to think or feel
I will one day ride a train
Where God's Glory never ends
And I never will return
I'm never coming home again
Never coming home again
And I will ride that train
I will ride that train

Not too many years went by
Daniel older but a child
Father said, the trains are coming
Daniel's father did not smile
Daniel you will get your train
Not to where our dreams run free
Nightmares also run on train tracks
Where you'd rather never be
This train runs to..or Auschwitz
Round and round and round and round
No one chose to ride this train
Most who ride do not return

Daniel hold your mother tightly
Ashen train smoke will not cease
Someone stop that click and clatter
Someone give us back God's peace
Daniel and his mama, papa
Rode that train thru nighttime fire
Only one returned to tell
.....write for end

Sea of Elohe

Elizabeth K Best ©1997

Lightly fell the snow in morning Whiter still the clouds of noon In the tiniest of graveyards Came a burial so soon Love had not been held in decades Died without a witness true Buried by a flock of strangers Gone and then forgotten too Long ago before the Snow had fallen As a young one Zion knew Something dark eclipse the Sun And the night went black and grew Little one played in the courtyard In a crowded ghetto town Danced pretend, a ballerina As a war grew all around Little hands grew just enough To begin to pray and cry Sing Shema and light a candle Sirens scream and trains role by Even Shabbes would not shelter Plans the devil made for sure 12 years old, goodbye to mother Where was God she wanted more Two years in a camp and hunger Cry for food at God's right hand Somehow lived past gas and fire Freedom comes but barely stands Weakened beaten bound forsaken Freedom comes at such a cost Returning to no home no family Friends had died the war was us Fifty years or more went by Rubble of a life and war Built again but smaller plainer Ezra's temple wanted more Once again the hatred grew Most of Zion left for home Still she stayed through wind and thunder Lvadi, Alone, Alone Lived alone and died alone No one there to watch her die No one left to weep or bury No one left to mourn or cry Whisper footsteps Snowing graveyard Footsteps only mark of grace Lived through war and love and terror Could death find so small a place? No man is an island, island So they sing and so they say But there are deserted islands In this Sea of Elohe In this Sea of Elohe As each silent witness dies Who will sing and who will say Only sailing ship: Messiah On the Sea of Elohe Lvadi, Lvado Sailed the Sea of Elohe Think a few hearts would be broken No, they all had turned to stone Elohim the only mourner Adonai the course and stay Turning to a crystal sea Sailed the Sea of Elohe

Merry-Go-Round

Merry-go-Round

In the light of the Day
Children at play
As they wait for the Merry-go-Round
And as wishes and dreams
Horses rise and they fall
Up and Down
Up and Down
Goes the Merry-Go-Round
On this side of the War and the Wall

Only 3 streets away
Other Children can't play
As they run from the soldiers' dark sound
Under beds, run and hide
From the Angry Flames' pride
On this side of the War and the Wall

Up and Down
Up and Down
Goes the Merry-Go-Round
Up and Down
Horses rise and they Fall
Up and Down
Up and Down
Goes the Merry-Go-Round
On this side of the War and the Wall

On both sides of the Wall
Children laugh and they cry
bouncing curls, smiles and
spirit and soul
But on one side they're
tested and harmed and they're tried
On one side they're bought
and they're sold
On one side they're fed and
they're warmed and they're blessed
On the other side beaten and bound
Up and down, up and down
Goes the Merry-Go-Round
On this side of the
War and the Wall

Well the Merry-Go-Round
went on with it's sound
On the day that the
Ghetto was burned
On one side of the wal
Children suffered and died
Were broken and bled
and were burned
In the maddening
Merry-Go-Round Town

Life went on,supper
came and then bed
On the dark side of town
When the screaming died down
Came no supper ,
the children were dead

And what put up that Wall
That kept one so small
From the love and
 attention and care
The Sin and the Pride
Of the ones Outside
Of the wall of the
 heart they built there

If I had my way in
this old Wicked World
I would stop that
Dread Merry-Go-Round
And Tear Down that Wall
Where they Suffered
and Died
On this Side of the
War and the Wall
Refrain

Zion's Streets of Warsaw

Zion's Streets of Warsaw

If you stand on a green grassy hill you can't tell,
That more than the wind has passed by,
For the grass has grown sweet
And covers the street
Where Warsaw's own zion once cried,
If you listen you'll hear the sounds of the
......

Sigh, and you'll say , "Such a long time ago,
Listen, you still hear them cry...

Zion's Streets of Warsaw are no more (2x)
But one day the streets of Zion will fill
With boys and girls at play...

Well the morning came, Zion's governor said,
They say they want 10,000 more
By afternoon they called for the women
Treblinka's gates were death's open door
Zion she cried, " No more let them go
Tis a trap will devour their lives
The governor said, no,
no we've been assured
They'll all be delivered alive...

But then came the evening,
They called for the children
Reality pierced like a spear
And the voices, the play ,
 the sound of the children
Weren't heard in the ghetto that year...

The governor died by his own hands that day,
As the children they slowly walked by
And we sigh and we say, a long time ago,
Listen you still hear them cry....

O Zion

O Zion!

Elizabeth K. Best (c) 1997
All Rights Reserved:

And the City of Zion rises in the Sand

And the stars fall on Jerusalem,
 reminding Abraham

Of a promise, O, a promise

Of a Kingdom and a Land

That lies before our eyes and

Calls at every hand

O Zion!

O Zion; O Zion!

I want to come home

Keep calling me home

In the Morning

Through sacrifice and darkness

Came the seed and came the Land

The stars , the glory of Godís seed

He promised also sand

The grains of sand like time too great

to number in Godís hand

But over untold centuries still sing the

Stars and sand

Refrain

Well Abraham grew old and tired, said

ďIsaac, Carry onĒ

The Life that God has given You

will one day bear a son

That son will bear a nation

Twelve fold in Israel strong

That nation will become a Land

And bear Godís Holy Son

Who cries,

refrain

Ani Maanim (for Christians)

ďI BELIEVE WITH PERFECT FAITH

IN THE COMING OF MESSIAH

AND THOUGH HE TARRY

I WILL WAIT, I WILL WAIT FOR HIMĒ

I WILL WAIT FOR HIM

I WILL WAIT FOR HIM

I WILL WAIT FOR HIM

I BELIEVE IN PERFECT FAITH

MESSIAH WALKED THE EARTH

I BELIEVE WITH PERFECT FAITH

A VIRGIN GAVE HIM BIRTH

I BELIEVE WITH PERFECT FAITH

HE CALMED THE WAVE AND SEA

I BELIEVE IN PERFECT FATH

HIS LOVE HAS HEALED ME.

I BELIEVE WITH PERFECT FAITH

ONE DARK AFTERNOON

KNOWN TO NO ONE BUT HIMSELF

HIS BLOOD PAID FOR SIN

HANGING HURTING ON THAT TREE

PERFECT FAITH KNEW CALVARY

I BELIEVE WITH PERFECT FAITH

MESSIAH DIED FOR ME

I BELIEVE IN PERFECT FAITH

THREE DAYS PAST THE CROSS

RESURRECTION WALKED AROUND

ROSE TO SAVE THE LOST

I BELIEVE WITH PERFECT FAITH

IN THE LIFE HE GAVE

I BELIEVE IN PERFECT FAITH

IN TRIUMPH OíER THE GRAVE

I BELIEVE IN PERFECT FAITH

HE WILL COME AGAIN

I BELIEVE IN PERFECT FAITH

FULFILLING WHAT HEíS PLANNED

I BELIEVE IN PERFECT FAITH

IN LIFE BEYOND THE GRAVE

I BELIEVE THE KING OF JEWS

HAS THE POWER TO SAVE.

Chariot of Wandering

Chariots of Wandering

(idea from Martyrs of Silence,

copyright 1999 E.Best,

ShirShamayim

The children of Elohim

watched from the shore

At the waves of wrath

That did more, even more

Than swallow the armies

that hurt and did harm

Children placed at Godís right arm

And Moses said see

Those chariots be

The ones of the earth

Bound by angriest sea

But for me

Rather than earthbound

Iíll be

In a Chariot of Wandering

A Chariot of Wandering

The bonds of earth they

Chain and bind

The heart that seeks to

Breathe and fly

Till wounded feet

Walked a bleeding earth

In a miracle of birth

Laying underfoot the

Grasp of sin

That from a fire

Pulled men in

Those wounded feet

Could not stand still

Tied to

Chariot of Wandering

Borne by a Chariot of Wandering

The Children Sing

	They were the children,

	 the children of Zion

and their voices filled the air

	Sweetly singing of Messiah

	Eretz Israel fair

Till the winds blew in a dying breath

and the trains began to pour

	Into Zion taking captive

all the children of the war

	Hear their voices, voices rising

Hear their voices fill the air

	In one song, eternal choir

	Singing sweetly singing fair

	Yerushalayim Bat Shalom

	yerushalayim Bat Shalom

	And the voices of the

	Children, rise in the air.

	Hurry children, please be ready

	Dont forget your yellow star

Tells the world, you are God's glory

Though they don't mean that by far

Turn now, children to the convoy

To the train and do not cry

Can we sing a little song

To show we're not afraid to die

	Jerusalem seems so far away

	When there's not enough bread

	 its not fair

And the samllest of hands reach

	out for the hands

That are no longer, no longer there

And the night falls the hardest

	on the smallest of hands

	Which should never have known

	 the night air

	Jerusalem seems so far away

The Angel of death doesn't care

	Sing Yerushalayim, Shalzahav 2x

	Voices of the Children

	Rise in the air

Little songs died one by one

	Little stars dimmed and died

but by grace they went to heaven

World forgot, but God he cried

	Lifted in Shekinah Glory

	With Messiah's song beside

	Hear the children hear

	them singing

	Hear the voices rising, dare

In the twinkiling of a moment

	In the New Jerusalem fair

	yerushalayim ....
